Knight and Day,[4] (formerly titled Wichita[5] and Trouble Man[4]) is a 2010 action comedy film starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The film, directed by James Mangold, is Cruise and Diaz’s second on-screen collaboration following the 2001 film Vanilla Sky.[6]

The film went through a period of “development hell”; which included a prior film director and multiple writers that worked on the script. Producers for Knight and Day went through multiple other actors for the lead roles before eventually settling on Cruise and Diaz. Adam Sandler, Chris Tucker, and Gerard Butler were considered by the film’s producers for the male lead that later went to Cruise, and Eva Mendes was initially set for the role that Diaz later portrayed in the movie. The film’s investors offset funding costs by paying Cruise a lower advance fee and neglecting to provide him with a share of the revenue until the financiers earn back their initial investment in the production.[7] Filming took place in several locations, mainly in several cities located in Massachusetts, while other scenes were filmed in Spain and parts of Austria.

Knight and Day was released in the United States on June 24, 2010. The film received mixed reviews from film critics; it garnered a “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes based upon aggregated reviews,[8] and a rating of “mixed or average reviews” at Metacritic.[9] Knight and Day performed poorly at the box office in its debut, proceeded to fall nine percent in ticket sales in its second day after being released, and took third place behind films Toy Story 3 and the comedy Grown Ups in its first Friday after release. At $20.5 million, the total U.S. weekend box office take for Knight and Day was the worst result for an action film starring Tom Cruise in 20 years.

Casting

The film changed lead cast members multiple times while the production was mired in a period known as “development hell”.[11] Prior to the finalization of actors Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, comedian and actor Adam Sandler was offered to star in the film when it was titled Wichita, but declined explaining, “I just don’t see me with a gun.”[11] Wichita was developed under production at Revolution Studios; the film was later moved to Sony Pictures.[11] At Sony Pictures, actors Chris Tucker and Eva Mendes were slated to portray the two lead roles in the film; it was titled Trouble Man and intended as a romantic vehicle film for Tucker and Mendes.[10][11]

After Tucker and Mendes dropped out of the lead roles, Diaz signed on to the film with Sony Pictures, and actor Gerard Butler met with production staff regarding starring opposite Diaz.[11] Butler instead decided to take on the lead role in the film The Bounty Hunter, opposite actress Jennifer Aniston.[11] Tom Cruise considered accepting a role in the film; at the time he was auditioning for parts in five films including Salt, and The Tourist.[11] Cruise decided he wished to star in Knight and Day, and had a vision for the film which included modifying the male lead character with his own ideas.[11] Other actors cast in the film included Maggie Grace, Peter Sarsgaard, Marc Blucas, Paul Dano, Viola Davis, and Jordi Mollà.

Plot:
The film begins in eastern Siberia (although the action appears to take place in a desert) with Dieter Von Cunth, the villain, and his men taking control of the X-5 missile, which contains a nuclear warhead. The scene then shifts to an Ecuadorian monastery, where Colonel Faith and Lt. Dixon Piper have come to find MacGruber. The two military men find MacGruber meditating in a chapel, and try to convince him to return to the United States. MacGruber refuses, even when he learns that the purpose of his return would be to go after his nemesis, Cunth. However, later that night, MacGruber explodes into a fit of rage after a flashback where Cunth killed his would-be wife Casey at their wedding, and decides to take Faith up on his offer.

MacGruber goes to the Pentagon, and, eventually, finds Col. Faith. After a heated and violent conversation with Faith and Piper, MacGruber decides he will form his own team to pursue Cunth, and will not tolerate Piper on his team. MacGruber visits all his potential team members and is successful in recruiting all but Vicki St. Elmo, his long time friend. MacGruber and his team meet Faith and Piper on a tarmac. Upon being questioned where his team is, MacGruber responds that they are in the van (seen in the background) along with his homemade C-4 explosives. The van promptly explodes, killing the whole team.

The scene shifts to Faith’s office. MacGruber is distraught over the loss of the team and his removal from the Cunth case. In a one on one conversation, MacGruber repeatedly offers to perform sexual acts on, or with, him if he will join his team. Vicki also arrives, completing MacGruber’s team .The group then travels to Cunth’s nightclub in Las Vegas. MacGruber is cut off by a car with license plate KFBR392, which he vigorously tries to remember. MacGruber then enters the nightclub and announces who he is and his intentions, as well as where he can be found the next day. The team then tries to set up a sting operation, with Vicki pretending to be MacGruber. However, the van MacGruber and Piper are sitting in is attacked by Haas Bender, one of Cunth’s henchmen. Fortunately, MacGruber manages to hit the gas pedal of the truck, crushing Bender.

The team then breaks into a warehouse to stop von Cunth from getting the passcodes to operate the rocket. MacGruber distracts the guards by walking around naked with a piece of celery sticking out of his butt. Piper manages to kill most of the men inside, but is unable to stop the transfer of the passcodes.

MacGruber and the team then go to a charity event Cunth is holding. MacGruber breaks into a poker game between Cunth and an influential senator. MacGruber tells the senator Cunth is bluffing, which winds up being a very bad move, leading Cunth to win the game. After a heated conversation, MacGruber is thrown out by Cunth’s guards.

After the fiasco, MacGruber returns to the Pentagon where he is told he is a liability. The scene then shifts to MacGruber and Piper drinking and hanging out. However, the two men are suddenly attacked. MacGruber uses Piper as a human shield to survive, and Vicki and MacGruber escape in the Miata. Piper survives due to the fact that he was wearing a bullet proof vest, but is disgusted that MacGruber used him as protection, and leaves him. Vicki and MacGruber then return to Vicki’s house where the two have sex. MacGruber then goes to his wife’s grave in shame, but he sees her ghost, who gives her blessing to allow MacGruber to pursue Vicki. They have sex immediately afterwards.

Upon returning to Vicki’s house (and destroying the car with license plate KFBR392), MacGruber discovers that Vicki has been kidnapped, and realizes what Cunth’s plan is: to bomb the State of the Union address. Cunth calls MacGruber to gloat, but MacGruber is able to trace the call. MacGruber then meets up with Piper to save Vicki. The two men make their way into Cunth’s compound, in large part due to MacGruber’s propensity for ripping throats. The two are captured and are taken to where Vicki and the missile are located. The group manages to prevent the missile from launching and escape.

The scene then shifts to MacGruber and Vicki’s wedding. Out of the corner of his eye, MacGruber spies a disfigured Cunth (who was believed to have died in the explosion) with an RPG. MacGruber saves Vicki, and then throws Cunth off the cliff behind the altar, shooting him with a machine gun all the way to the bottom.

Cast:
* Will Forte as MacGruber
* Kristen Wiig as Vicki St. Elmo
* Ryan Phillippe as Lt. Dixon Piper
* Val Kilmer as Dieter Von Cunth
* Maya Rudolph as Casey Sullivan
* Powers Boothe as Col. Jim Faith

Cameo appearances

    * Chris Jericho as Frank Korver
* M.V.P. as Vernon Freedom
* The Great Khali as Tug Phelps
* The Big Show as Brick Hughes
* Mark Henry as Tut Beemer
* Kane as Tanker Lutz
* Amar’e Stoudemire as Himself
* Derek Mears as Large Henchman

Box office:
The film grossed $1.5 million on its opening night,[11] and an estimated $4.1 million for its opening weekend.

Box office:
Having it as the widest release for an animated film playing in 4,359 theaters on May 21, 2010, on opening day in the US, the film took #1, grossing an estimated $20,750,000. This was far less auspicious than the opening days of the last two Shrek films. The film then opened in three days with $70,838,207, lower than the two previous films, Shrek 2, which opened with $108 million back in 2004 and Shrek the Third, which opened with $121 million back in 2007. However, it’s far bigger than the original Shrek, which opened with $42 million back in 2001. Anne Globe, head of worldwide marketing for DreamWorks Animation, said they were happy with the movie’s opening since it debuted at #1 and also had the fourth best opening for an animated movie behind Shrek the Third, Shrek 2, and The Simpsons Movie.[20]

As of May 27, 2010 Shrek Forever After has earned $89,750,351 at the domestic box office, and an additional $25,798,120 overseas giving the film a worldwide gross of $115,548,471.
